Q:     Where can I AutoRoam™?
A:     Eligible mobile customers on a monthly plan can roam in over 165 countries.

Q:     How do I use AutoRoam™?
A:     Follow these easy instructions.

When you arrive overseas
Turn on your phone. After about 30 seconds, most phones will automatically select one of the AutoRoam™ overseas networks. Once connected, the name of the network will appear on your phone screen. Your phone is then ready to use.

If a network isn’t selected or you would prefer to use a different network (for example, GPRS services may not be available on all networks in a particular country), you can select manually using your handset menu.

Receiving calls while overseas
When using Optus AutoRoam™, your mobile number stays the same.

   1. Callers from Australia dial your mobile number as if you were still in Australia.
   2. Callers from outside Australia (including callers from the overseas country you’re in) must also dial your mobile number as if you were still in Australia.

Making local and long distance calls while overseas
It’s just as easy to make local and long distance calls on your Optus mobile overseas as it is at home. You can make local and long distance calls, simply by dialling the area code and phone number.

Making international calls and sending SMS and MMS while overseas
When making international calls or sending SMS or MMS, enter the number in international format:

   1. Dial +. This will automatically substitute for the international exit code for the country you’re in. On most phones the + is located on the * or 0 button
   2. Dial the country code, area code (excluding the first zero) and phone number for the destination you’re calling. Note: An area code is not required when calling a mobile; however you must exclude the first zero of the mobile number.
For example +61 4XX XXX XXX for an Australian mobile number or +61 2 9XXX XXXX for a Sydney home phone.

Will my mobile work overseas?

If you are travelling to any of the following countries, please read the information below.

  • North America & Caribbean
  • Japan
  • Korea
  • South & Central America

To make sure you can use your mobile overseas you need to know what frequencies it can operate on. There are a number of different frequency bands used by GSM mobile phone networks around the world:

  • 900 MHz
  • 1800 MHz
  • 1900 MHz
  • 850 MHz
  • 2100 MHZ

Single / Dual-band (GSM)

Most European GSM networks use 900MHz and 1800MHz frequencies and for this reason the majority of Australian mobiles fall into the category of being Dual-band i.e. 900MHz and 1800MHz compatible. Check your mobile user manual to find out which frequencies your mobile will operate on.

Tri-band (GSM)

Some networks in regions such as the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and South America use the 1900MHz frequency. To use these networks you will require what is called a Tri-band mobile. This mobile allows you to use the 900MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz frequencies. Check your mobile user manual to find out if your mobile is tri-band and can operate on the 1900MHz frequency.

Quad-band (GSM)

Networks that operate on the 850MHz frequency are not common however some Southern and Central American networks do use this frequency. Very few mobiles currently on the market are Quad-band, and enable access to 850MHz networks.
